After completing her Master’s degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, Kara traveled to Nanjing, China for an intensive internship at the China Nanjing International Acupuncture Training Centre in the Gynecology department. She had the opportunity to study under a highly respected senior medical doctor who has been in the field of Women’s Health for over 50 years. Treatment Modalities

Acupuncture is the artful insertion of fine needles into the body at specific acupuncture points along the body’s meridians. In most cases, your acupuncturist is utilizing a complete system of diagnosis and treatment employed in the management of human health. In the United States, the practice of Acupuncture includes the methods employed by a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine, although licensure and scope of practice varies from state to state. TCM practices include, but are not limited to, “Acupuncture”, which is the insertion of fine needles into the body at specific acupuncture points, moxibustion, cupping, bodywork therapy, botanical medicine, nutritional therapy, diet and lifestyle counseling. Learn more here about Traditional Chinese Medicine from Jade Mountain Medicine, Kara’s practice that she co-directs with her partner, Jason Miller.

Experience

I specialize in women’s health and having been attending births for nearly 20 years. While I have had not received formal training in sexual violence I have had the opportunity to navigate many situations with patients as trauma often goes unaddressed until they are in the process of becoming a parent in addition to the survivors of sexual violence with whom I have worked. After attending a birth in which there was an acupuncturist present, I was inspired to pursue my Masters degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine in Portland, Oregon. My travels to Nanjing, China for an intensive internship at the China Nanjing International Acupuncture Training Centre in the Gynecology department gave me the opportunity to study under a highly respected senior medical doctor who has been in the field of Women’s Health for over 50 years and enhanced my ability to provide support services for women Chinese medicine.

My Interest in Working with Survivors

As a healthcare practitioner, I am interested in accompanying my patients through all and any issues that they need support and help with. Since the population I generally work with are women, obviously this issue comes up frequently, and I feel confident that I am serving them in the best way possible. Ultimately, I work with anyone who walks through my door, yet I would love to create a safe haven for people to work through sexual trauma since I really believe Chinese Medicine has a unique and powerful ability to assist them in their healing.

How My Practice Holistically Addresses the Impacts of Sexual Trauma

Chinese Medicine fundamentally addresses all levels of an individual. There is simply no separation recognized, so it is literally impossible to address one aspect of a person’s trauma without treating them all. I utilize acupuncture, moxabustion, cupping, and Chinese herbs to treat patients.

Modifications for Survivors

I will offer modifications in any way that feels necessary to the client and is possible within the treatment!

Other Areas of Expertise

My specialty is Women’s Health and I treat women of all ages from the teenage years all the way through menopause, with an emphasis on pregnancy and pre/post-natal care.

Payment Options

I am able to offer sliding-scale treatments.
