Experience
I was involved with a non-profit called Samaritan House which included being a part of their speakers series. In my practice, I have worked with women and men who have survived domestic violence and are seeking healing through somatics, wellness, and breathwork sessions.
My Interest in Working with Survivors
As a survivor, I know personally some of the challenges that are faced during recovery and that there is a deep need for this work. My survival gave me a second chance to offer support, care, and skills to heal, as well as to be a steward to those moving through recovery from domestic violence.
My Approach to Trauma-Informed Care
Trauma-informed care means we are conscious and aware of activation within the nervous system, as well as how to presence and attune to the client. We cannot always know or get a full (yet important and helpful to have) trauma history, which means we must recognize trauma responses, create space for charged experiences and remembering to avoid re-experiencing trauma, and then know how to guide clients to and through discharge in their system. The goal is to offer a space where the client can unlearn and relearn about their own organism, needs, functions, and well-being. It asks me to tend my own system, to have a well-functioning nervous system, and to acknowledge and learn about things I may not have experience with regards to different systems of oppression and marginalization, and to be clear on my scope of practice, including referring out when needed.
How My Practice Holistically Addresses the Impacts of Sexual Trauma
As my teacher Dr. Peter Levine says, "The issues get stored in our tissues." It all happens to our body. In a society that often models shutting off the body, learning about our body and its various systems - like the nervous system, the vagus nerve, and polyvagal theory - can help liberate us from what happened. In bringing our body back to wholeness, we re-member we are more than what happened to us.
Modifications for Survivors
I believe safety requires allyship, I cannot make someone feel safe however I can learn what they need to access, feel, and grow their own internal safety and meet them right where they are. Having a grounded energy, a well-functioning nervous system, presence, compassion, attunement, and acceptance are cornerstones of offering safety through me for us both.
Other Areas of Expertise
I have been in Somatic Abolitionism through Education for Racial Equity for two years. I participate with/in The Embodiment Institute, Generative Somatics, Lumos Transforms, and other communal spaces of diversity, inclusivity, and community. I am in several containers walking with and tending to grief as a necessary and wise teacher.
Accountability Statement
I have mentors within Somatic Experiencing International which involve receiving personal sessions and case consultations, I work with 3 - 4 triads monthly practicing somatic abolitionism, and I meet with peers in several containers to discuss these topics, modalities, and our scope of practices.
Payment Options
I offer a sliding-scale option for sessions and I am always willing to discuss lower payment options. I also offer pay-what-you-can sessions monthly.
